I share here some insight into how character creation works in From Midgard to Eternity, our game about being a Norse adventurer trying to create their own story.
Here you can see the spread I made for the character creation process. The art is by Vapordruid.
For starters, this process it's taken from our playable demo, which you can check out here. It explains tags and the game loop, and it also shows you some content for 2 of the Realms (Midgard and Jötunheim).
Also, check out our romantic thread by Hipólita talking about how tags work here.
“You were born into the world, yet among all creatures on the nine realms, the Nornir alone know what your thread of fate looks like. You might live to a hundred and die peacefully, but where would the renown, the fame, the legend be?” This is how Character Creation starts!
Character Creation is evocative, simple, and alluring. Characters don’t have stats, though each encounter might demand different things from you, such as a particular kind of tag, that could make your rolls easier (or not). It’s based on choosing tags and answering questions. And defining how long you want your playthrough to be.
Tags can be literal or a little figurative, when needed you can define how to apply it narratively. Here’s a brief description of tags’ categories (Taken from the playable demo).
First I choose a tag for each category, as shown in the spread above (the first picture shared). I’m born with one of each + the ¤ unknown to the gods .
▷ raven’s hair ◇ irrational ◎ Urdarbrunn flashes ▽ firstborn .
Then, I will choose my name and explain my relationship with my name. It was chosen by my mother, who passed away years later. A wolf killed her while she was checking out if something had fallen in one of her traps. She named me, ironically, Ulfhild . This name gives me a weird sense of humor.
Also, I pick my weapon. ▷ spear . As well, I will pick a memento from home I always take with me. I choose ¤ An unreadable füthark. I might want to create stories surrounding every choice I make, to give flesh to my character. I think that the füthark is something I found near my mum’s grave, the carving is a little more complex than what I can comprehend, sometimes I read it as Hagall ᚺ, others as Mannaz ᛗ, and also some other times as Ehwaz ᛖ. Its meaning doesn’t reveal to me. Yet.
The last thing I’ll have to pick is the age of Ulfhild, how old is she when her saga begins? Since the game ends when your destined death and your actual age get both at the same point in a track, these options determine how long your playthrough will be. I will choose 60, so when I do a playthrough, I can fit it in here more easily.
Here’s my character sheet. I will use it until the game ends to track the tags, age, and destined death. For every answer, explanation, and story, I’d use a notebook. I will journal everything Ulfhild lives until she gets to Valhalla (or dies trying).
